Veneers to get your teeth “in alignment”

Conventional braces and modern orthodontic options like clear aligner therapy are designed to reposition the teeth incrementally. In turn, these treatments correct crowding and crooked or otherwise unevenly-spaced teeth. They also resolve discrepancies between the position of opposing upper and lower teeth in the jaw. Now, veneers result in the appearance of straighter teeth, free of gaps and other imbalances. However, veneers do not actually reposition the teeth. Veneers are for cosmetic correction, meaning you must have otherwise healthy teeth and gums. If we find that conditions such as tooth decay or gum disease may be to blame for loose or shifting teeth, our world-renowned endodontist, Dr. Fanny Yacaman, may be able to “save” even badly damaged teeth with nonsurgical or surgical endodontic therapies. 

For patients who are good candidates for veneers, the process of disguising gaps and otherwise “perfecting” your smile goes something like this: 

• The natural tooth is “prepared” by removing a small amount of enamel from the tooth’s surface.
• Minimal tooth structure is removed. So, numbing is typically not necessary for comfort. 
• A model or impression of the tooth or teeth is/are made, which is then used to fabricate the permanent veneer from high-quality, stain-resistant, and durable porcelain (that looks like natural enamel).
• A temporary veneer is placed by our talented prosthodontist, Dr. Frank Vidjak. This step protects the slightly reduced tooth.
• Once the permanent veneers are ready to go, Dr. Vidjak secures them to the front surfaces of the teeth. They effectively cover up the excess space between the teeth. 

It is mainly necessary to design, make, and place more veneers to camouflage larger gaps and to support the most natural-looking proportions. Otherwise, the veneered teeth may appear oddly wide or thick.
