Drs Fanny Yacaman and Frank Vidjak, as specialists in endodontics and prosthodontics, respectively, appreciate that teeth restored in their onsite dental lab should look, feel, and function like the “real thing” – a natural tooth before it sustained damage caused by dental decay, gum disease, or other trauma.
Accordingly, you will not find silver-colored metal fillings at our Beverly Hills, California specialty center. Instead, Beverly Hills Advanced Specialties of Dentistry uses premium highly aesthetic, non-toxic, conservative, and strong dental materials to rebuild teeth.
Contrary to their name, silver fillings mainly contain mercury. Our dentist office is free of any materials, products, or substances that are known toxins, including mercury. The colloquial term for these conventional fillings is actually derived from their color; while they appear silver in hue, these fillings are made up of an “amalgam” or combination of metals. These metals include copper, tin, silver, and mercury. By weight, mercury accounts for more than half of each filling.
Patients can be exposed to mercury through their fillings. In addition to health and environmental concerns associated with the use of these mercury-containing amalgam fillings, they simply do not look like natural teeth. They stick out unattractively in the smile. Metal amalgam fillings are also aggressive, in that more of the natural tooth must be drilled out to prepare the tooth structure for the placement of the filling. Lastly, they do not “wear well”; they tend to corrode over time. The degradation of the filling over time can make the tooth vulnerable to reinfection or future damage that requires additional restorative treatment.
We at Beverly Hills Advanced Specialties of Dentistry place attractive, safe, and durable porcelain and composite resin fillings. These fillings look and function like natural, healthy teeth. They are also conservative. Minimal tooth structure is altered or reduced to accommodate the filling. With proper home care and professional care at our office, these dental fillings continue to wear well, and do not lose their luster or strength over time.
Additionally, should patients have more extensive decay, our in-house endodontist, Dr. Yacaman, can resolve deep inflammation or infection with non-surgical root canal therapy or advanced endodontic surgical techniques. Following treatment, Dr. Vidjak applies his prosthodontic expertise to restore the treated tooth.
Do not ignore changes to your mouth, such as sudden sensitivity when drinking or eating sweet, hot, or cold beverages and foods. These oral conditions do not go away on their own, and require prompt dental treatment to prevent them from progressing. The more advanced the disease or decay, the more extensive and time-consuming the restorative procedure to treat the condition.
