As a prosthodontist, Dr. Vidjak specializes in the replacement of anything in the mouth to restore oral health and function (“prostho” refers to “replacement” and “odont” to “teeth”). Dental crowns are among the most common and versatile types of dental restorations. They are designed to restore or replace lost tooth structures. A tooth can be marred by dental decay and the effects of periodontal (gum) disease. The tooth is eroded from the outside inward.

Less extensive forms of damage, such as enamel erosion, can be corrected with oral hygiene modifications or preventive services designed to remineralize the tooth. However, if sufficient tooth structure is eroded, dental materials must be “prepared” (designed and shaped) to replace the lost tissue. A tooth that develops a cavity or hole in its surface can be repaired with a filling. If the hole is too large to be supported by a filling, then more extensive types of restorations may be recommended, among them dental crowns.

Each tooth has a natural crown, which is the visible white part above the gum line. When that portion of the teeth is damaged, crowns may be made to fit over the natural tooth. The crown is fashioned from durable, tooth-like dental materials such as ceramic-like porcelain. The natural tooth is also reduced in size, and any decayed matter is removed. So, the new crown fits over the tooth perfectly and gets a fresh slate. Crowns may also be designed, fabricated, and placed to:

Lastly, Dr. Vidjak is joined by endodontist Dr. Fanny Yacaman. Dr. Yacaman is skilled in preserving teeth with endodontic nonsurgical (root canal therapy) and surgical procedures. Often, crowns are placed following root canal treatment, which Dr. Yacaman expertly administers. The skilled doctors at our practice are Frank M. A. Vidjak, DDS, MSEd and Fanny Yacaman, DDS, MSEd, MS.

Dr. Vidjak has been a prosthodontist for over two decades, with his private practice in Beverly Hills from 1989. A USC School of Dentistry graduate, he completed his specialty training in prosthodontics and an MS in Medical Education at USC where he also taught the School of Dentistry. He was its Clinical Director of the Advanced Prosthodontic Program and International Student Program too.

Dr. Yacaman received her DDS from the University Technologica of Mexico and served the clinical faculty in Endodontics at Unitec. She practiced Endodontics in Mexico City for over 10 years. She has an advanced specialty certificate in Advanced Microscopic Endodontics and Microsurgery and a Master of Science in Medical Education from the USC and has been a Clinical Faculty member at the UCLA School of Dentistry Department of Endodontics for more than 15 years. She specializes in Root Resorption treatment, having researched on External Root Resorption for over 15 years for a Master’s in Craniofacial Molecular Biology at USC’s Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology. She is one of four Endodontists in United States that can treat Root Resorption. She is a local and international lecturer in Endodontics and Microsurgery and has received many awards and has published articles in the area.
