Range of restorative treatments combined to “save” your damaged tooth

At Beverly Hills Advanced Specialties of Dentistry, we have extensive specialized training and sophisticated, onsite technologies to preserve even broken and damaged teeth. Whenever possible, our prosthodontist, Dr. Frank Vidjak, and our endodontist, Dr. Fanny Yacaman, avoid dental extractions or the removal of the affected tooth. The notable exception is impacted wisdom teeth because these third molars are unnecessary for oral health and healthy function. Otherwise, there is no superior tooth in form and function than the natural, healthy one that developed with you!

Repair of damaged teeth

The approach that we take to resolving problems such as decay and oral infections and, specifically, the type of dental restoration that we use depends on the nature and extent of the damage that is present. Our use of advanced diagnostics accurately pinpoints anatomical features and underlying problems, which then informs the development of an effective treatment plan.

We may find the following conditions and have highlighted methods to treat those specific problems accordingly. In doing so, we prevent smaller cracks or concerns from turning into more significant issues that threaten the structural integrity and health of the tooth. Our precision restorative techniques support the lasting strength and durability of the weakened tooth.

Minor cracks – For example, “craze lines” refer to “micro-fractures” that affect only the outermost covering of the tooth (or its “enamel”). If we identify these characteristic lines, applying composite bonding (direct veneers) or porcelain veneers (also known as indirect veneers) may be appropriate to strengthen the tooth and cover-up craze lines.
More significant fractured cusps or cracks – A tooth’s cusp, high point, or tip may be built up and restored with dental restorations such as a dental onlay (partial crown) or its full-coverage dental crown counterpart. Cracks that generally do not extend below the gum line can be treated with root canal therapy and restoration with a crown. Vertical root fractures and some “split teeth,” too, can be treated with the skills of our root canal specialist, Dr. Yacaman. As an endodontist, she has training in many other endodontic surgical procedures to “save” a badly cracked tooth.

The skilled doctors at our practice are Frank M. A. Vidjak, DDS, MSEd and Fanny Yacaman, DDS, MSEd, MS.

Dr. Vidjak has been a prosthodontist for over two decades, with his private practice in Beverly Hills from 1989. A USC School of Dentistry graduate, he completed his specialty training in prosthodontics and an MS in Medical Education at USC where he also taught the School of Dentistry. He was its Clinical Director of the Advanced Prosthodontic Program and International Student Program too.

Dr. Yacaman received her DDS from the University Technologica of Mexico and served the clinical faculty in Endodontics at Unitec. She practiced Endodontics in Mexico City for over 10 years. She has an advanced specialty certificate in Advanced Microscopic Endodontics and Microsurgery and a Master of Science in Medical Education from the USC and has been a Clinical Faculty member at the UCLA School of Dentistry Department of Endodontics for more than 15 years. She specializes in Root Resorption treatment, having researched on External Root Resorption for over 15 years for a Master’s in Craniofacial Molecular Biology at USC’s Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology. She is one of four Endodontists in United States that can treat Root Resorption. She is a local and international lecturer in Endodontics and Microsurgery and has received many awards and has published articles in the area.
