Root canal therapy is often a highly effective procedure for saving a severely damaged tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted. However, in some cases, infection or inflammation can occur after the procedure, leading to the tooth not healing properly. When this happens, a microsurgical endodontic procedure called an apicoectomy may be recommended. Endodontic specialist Dr. Fanny Yacaman combines her expertise with state-of-the-art equipment in our comfortable Beverly Hills, California office to gently perform this procedure and help return your tooth to health.
In short, an apicoectomy is a type of dental microsurgery in which the tip of the tooth root (called the apex) is removed, and a filling is placed to seal the root and protect it from further disease. When an apicoectomy is indicated, it is often the only remaining treatment option to save a tooth from extraction.
To perform an apicoectomy, we first gently numb the area and provide sedatives as needed to keep you comfortable throughout your treatment. We then perform an incision in the gum tissue to visualize the underlying bone and remove any infected tissue along with the tip of the root. Then, we place a small filling to seal the root canal and place sutures in the gum, allowing your incision to heal properly.
We will provide you with thorough aftercare instructions after your apicoectomy is complete and will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure that the tooth has healed properly.
At Beverly Hills Advanced Specialties of Dentistry, we are committed to helping patients preserve their natural teeth whenever possible with treatments such as apicoectomies. To schedule your consultation at our Beverly Hills, CA office, call (310) 861-3955.
