The number of implants a person can get depends on how many teeth must be replaced. These teeth may have already been extracted, or they may be failing and are not good candidates for root canal therapy or other endodontic procedures performed by our endodontist, Dr. Fanny Yacaman. One implant may be positioned and secured in the jawbone to stabilize or retain a single replacement tooth or crown. Alternatively, an upper or lower denture may be stabilized with as few as four to six implants placed in the jaw. Furthermore, many teeth may be replaced with just a few implants as part of an implant-retained dental bridge.
By partnering with professionals with highly specialized knowledge and onsite capabilities, you minimize the risk of implant failures. Our prosthodontist, Dr. Frank Vidjak, applies his considerable expertise in rebuilding teeth and tissues to position each implant in the jawbone precisely. Proper surgical placement of the implant helps to minimize failures by encouraging healthy healing and the growth or integration of the implant into the surrounding bone. Strategic placement of each implant also helps to ensure that the available bone is maximized. So, we can place a minimal number of implants to support a maximum number of prosthetic teeth – around 10 to 14 per dental arch or upper or lower denture. Proper integration with the bone also ensures that your new crown, bridge, or denture has a stable foundation to hold up well for many years, even a lifetime, with good oral care.
Prosthetic teeth supported by implants generally restore a natural appearance and feel in the mouth. They also restore natural, healthy, and efficient chewing and other functions. They stand out favorably from “traditional” forms of tooth replacement because they replace the roots of the teeth. Once the implant is precisely introduced to the right place in the jaw, it heals to the surrounding bone and can effectively function as a tooth root. Conventional bridges and dentures only replace the visible parts of the teeth (the white crown and gummy tissue). They require additional care, ongoing adjustments, and replacement. Since implant-supported teeth are connected to the jaw, they keep the bone and other structures of the face strong. Otherwise, without the stimulation from the teeth, the jawbone shrinks. This process alters the shape and appearance of the face and the fit of traditional dentures. These complications are avoided with implant-retained dentures. The “artificial tooth roots” (implants) connect the prosthetic teeth to the jaw. So, the bone gets the stimulation it needs to remain strong.
Additionally, our onsite lab capabilities help ensure that your new teeth are indistinguishable from natural, healthy, and attractive ones.
