Our specialists at Beverly Hills Advanced Specialties of Dentistry have extensive training and experience with rebuilding portions of the teeth and supportive tissues. Led by prosthodontist, Dr. Frank Vidjak, and endodontist, Dr. Fanny Yacaman, our skilled team creates “rebuilt” tooth structure that is indistinguishable in appearance, “feel” in the mouth, function and durability from a healthy tooth.
We are also proponents of conservative dental options. Restorations that conservatively rebuild and replace lost tooth structure minimally alter existing teeth and preserve utmost natural tissues. This approach optimally replicates tissues in form and function. Examples of conservative restorations include inlays and onlays.
The anatomy of each natural tooth includes points or tips called “cusps.” Inside of each of these high points or cusps of the tooth is the lower, flatter chewing surface. When only the chewing surface of the tooth is decayed or otherwise damaged, a dental inlay may be all that is necessary to rebuild the damaged portion of the tooth. Accordingly, the inlay fits inside of the cusps and on the chewing surface. The inlay is made of a tooth-like dental material whose color and shape blends in naturally with the surrounding tooth. Once the damaged tissue has been removed and the inlay is bonded or secured into place, it restores and strengthens the weakened tooth.
If one of our specialists recommends an onlay, this is generally indicative of more extensive damage to the tooth. In addition to covering the chewing surface of the prepared tooth, the onlay also covers at least one cusp or point of the tooth. This tooth-like, shaped dental material is frequently referred to as a “partial crown,” because it is considered to be an alternative to a full-coverage dental crown. A full crown replaces the visible, white portion of the tooth above the gum line. Crowns also frequently follow root canal therapy, which is administered by our specialist in these and other endodontic treatments, Dr. Yacaman.
